New Motivation

July 19th 2008 05:40
Though I've been posting here about dieting tips, etc. I really haven't been taking my own advice. After my recent short-but-sweet family vacation, I'm newly motivated.

By standard ideal weights, I'm about 100 pounds overweight. Even so, I've been generally healthy. I recently found out that I'm not quite as healthy as I'd thought.

On our vacation, we made a stop at the Grand Canyon. There are lots of places to walk and see better views. I couldn't do it. After riding in the car for several days, my circulation was so bad in my legs that I couldn't walk. After only a few minutes of walking, my legs felt like there were ants stinging them from my knees to my toes. The pain was excruciating!

On the way home, it only got worse. I couldn't even walk through a grocery store without coming to tears. I decided it was time to get back in shape and take dieting seriously.

I've already made an appointment with a doctor, and since returning home have seriously stuck to my diet. I've given up sodas (again) and started eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and little meat. I'm determined not to let my health ruin any more family fun.

DIABETES and Eating Right

June 14th 2008 04:45
I have a couple of friends who are diabetic. My husband is diabetic. My father is diabetic. My aunt (mother's sister) is diabetic. My mother-in-law and my father-in-law are both diabetic. My kids are doomed! (Come to think of it, I probably am as well.)

Knowing so many diabetics and being so likely to become diabetic myself, I have been doing a lot of reading about how to eat right to PREVENT diabetes. Of all the diabetics I know, my father is the only one who really does what he needs to do. He eats a healthy diet. He checks his blood glucose levels daily. He walks and exercises daily. These are all lifestyle changes he made to keep the disease from causing further problems.

Had a talk with my mother-in-law the other day. I was complaining that my husband doesn't always eat right, and he doesn't check his blood glucose levels frequently enough. She admitted that she's the same way.

I explained to her that it is very important to check her blood daily to be sure she is not causing irreparable damage to her body. So many diabetics don't get the proper education to understand the disease and the problems it can cause.

Low blood sugar causes symptoms. You know when your blood sugar is low. You are dizzy, groggy, etc. Easy fix - eat or drink something sugary (juice or a non-diet soda is the quickest fix.)

High blood sugar, on the other hand, isn't quite as easy to recognize. You don't really feel anything when your blood sugar rises. It is when it is high, though, that the damage occurs. When your blood sugar maintains high levels, damage is done to your kidneys, your eyes, your circulation. You may lose your kidneys, your vision, your limbs. It is SERIOUS!!!

While I was explaining all this to my mother-in-law, she went and got her glucose monitor and checked. Her blood sugar was 195. She hadn't eaten in a few hours, so it should have been around 100. Turns out, she had eaten a candy bar earlier in the day. Four hours later, her glucose level was still that high. I think she got the point.

If you are diabetic, please get educated about your disease. It IS manageable, but you have to stick with it. Yes, you can eat sugar every now and then - as long as you are keeping your blood sugar levels under control. If you don't check - you don't know. In this case - "no news" is NOT good news. If you aren't checking your blood sugar, you should be. EVERY DAY!

(OPENPRESS) Mar. 14, 2008 - Bloomfield, MI – There are more than 72 million obese adults, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and most of them struggle to stick to their goals and resolutions to lose weight.

Unfortunately, most new year resolutions are broken within a very short time, according to reports. Many adults over 50 are turning to a health and wellness web site designed just for them to get the help they need to achieve their health goals for the new year.

The CDC recently reported that one in three U.S. adults is obese. Those calculations are based on the body mass index, which relates height to weight. For example, a woman who is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 186 pounds or more is obese. So is a man who is 5 feet 9 inches and weighs 203 pounds or more.

Adult obesity is twice as common as it was 20 years ago, and it makes conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some cancers more likely, according to the CDC.

For people over 50 who want to lose weight and find help with those and other health concerns, there is a web site designed to help them quickly and easily without cost or the risk of giving personal information over the Internet.

The site is located at http://www.50PlusWebHealth.com where information and help can be obtained without entering personal information with a simple click of the mouse.

The site makes it easy to find the resources that make resolutions easier to achieve, and it provides help with all the most common health concerns for people over 50. It is also very simple to find the desired information without any computer training or skills. Just point and click, without the need to enter personal information or register, so there is no security risk.

“We make it easier because there are so many forms of support and help for people to use. We have done all the exhaustive research and complied everything in one place to make it simple and easy to find. Plus, it is free, so you can’t beat that,” said William Person, founder of the site.

About 50PlusWebHealth:
William Person of Bloomfield, MI created 50PlusWebHealth.com to provide older adults with quick easy access to important health information without the need to reveal personal information of any kind.

Losing Weight the Healthy Way

February 27th 2008 18:12
The thing is, I KNOW the right way to eat and lose weight. The problem is, I DON'T follow my own advice!

I've struggled with weight most of my life - ALL of my adult life. I was "chubby" when I was a pre-teen, dieted (not in a healthy way) when I was a teenager, and have been fat since I got married and had babies. Now, I'm not just fat, I'm OBESE! I currently weigh 210 pounds. This is how much I weighed at full term pregnancy, and it was too much even then! (and since my youngest is now 12, I have no excuse!) I'm only 5'3" tall - so I should weigh about 125-135 pounds (depending on the chart I'm looking at

January 22nd 2008 00:12
December 18, 2007 -- Pioneered by Joseph Pilates almost a century ago, the Pilates discipline of body conditioning is a uniquely precise exercise designed to lengthen and strengthen muscles and improve posture without stressing the joints.

Vegetarian Meals

As I stated in a previous post, my daughter has decided not to eat meat. I hesitate to call her a vegetarian, because she really doesn't like vegetables much. I'm trying, therefore, to find foods she likes, that don't contain meat

My daughter (she's 12) has decided to become a vegetarian. The problem is, she doesn't like vegetables!

Her reason for this decision is the cruel treatment of animals raised for food. She opposes chickens being kept in small cages, and "tricked" into laying eggs more frequently than they would naturally. She also opposes cows being kept pregnant to produce milk (though she hasn't completely given up milk or cheese yet), and beef cattle kept in small spaces, fed steroids, etc. to produce more meat
