The cost of dieting????
October 18th 2006 06:06
One of my pet excuses for not losing weight is the “it costs too much to lose weight and eat well”, this has now gone out the window. I can no longer use this excuse. Ok the low fat foods are often more expensive but have you added up the cost of three take away dinners, muffins and coffees at work, ice creams and treats for dessert, and lets not forget those bloody vending machines! I am now an advocate of not only losing weight but also saving money. In the past few days my total meal costs have been far less than a few months ago and I have even stopped buying the kids treats. They don’t need them!!!!!!! All they need is a hug, and sometimes a quick kick up the butt………only joking, that’s right “time out” is all the rage (for punishment) now, I wonder what underlying psychological issues that one is going to cause our young ones?
Getting back to business though, I am seriously considering, personally asking John Howard to open up clinics for people who need help to lose weight. Why should we have to pay thousands of dollars when the anorexics get their treatment for free? That may sound harsh but don’t forget that heart disease is the biggest killer in Australians these days!
The facts:
• Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the term used for heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases and is the leading cause of death in Australia, accounting for 38% of all deaths in 2002; claiming the lives of more than one in three Australians.
• Risk factors for Cardiovascular disease include people who are overweight, relatively inactive, smoke daily, have diabetes, have high blood pressure and/ or high cholesterol
• 60% of Australians are overweight – 7.42 million adults

Surely the government can see that by implementing some sort of Medicare funded program to assist overweight people, they would ultimately cut their associated health care costs and therefore save the government money. It’s probably not as easy as this, but it seems to be extremely hard for overweight people to get assistance, it is almost as though you need to be overly obese before you are considered to have a medical problem, why is this?????????
Oh yeah, I didn’t do aerobics this morning, it was a bit unrealistic of me to think I would get up at 6.00am just to do exercise, maybe next year, or maybe never. If only I had a wake up call from my mate Johnny……………………
